The Waistband That Makes Northrune Shorts More Comfortable
At Northrune, sustainability isn’t a buzzword—it’s a responsibility. Every part of how we ship and package your order is intentionally chosen to reduce environmental impact, starting with one of the biggest global polluters: plastic poly mailers and traditional product bags.
The Problem with Conventional Plastic Packaging
Single-use plastic mailers and poly bags are a major contributor to landfill waste and ocean pollution. According to a 2023 report by the OECD, over 40% of global plastic waste comes from packaging alone, and only about 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled. The rest ends up in landfills, incinerated, or polluting ecosystems. Studies from institutions such as the United Nations Environment Program show that packaging plastics are among the top contributors to microplastic contamination in soil and marine environments.
We knew we couldn’t contribute to that.
Compostable, Non-Toxic Product Bags
Instead of traditional plastic garment bags, we use 100% plant-based compostable packaging made from biodegradable resin. These bags are certified safe for the environment:
-
Certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) under ASTM D6400 (USA)
-
OK Compost Home certified under EN 13432 (Europe) by Vinçotte and TÜV Austria
Under proper composting conditions, these bags break down within 180 days and return to the soil without releasing toxins, chemicals, or microplastics.
Eco-Friendly Shipping Mailers
For external packaging, we use Elementree kraft paper mailers, a sustainable alternative to plastic shipping bags.
-
Made from recyclable paper
-
How2Recycle certified for curbside recycling
-
Free from plastic, laminates, and landfill waste
Everything in your shipment—from the inner packaging to the mailer itself—is compostable, recyclable, or biodegradable.
Sustainability Meets Craftsmanship
Inside every Northrune package is the most important part: a product hand-sewn in Minnesota, made with intention, care, and respect for people and the planet. Our eco-friendly packaging is the first impression of a much deeper commitment to ethical production.
